Ursula Jenkins Obituary

Ursula M. Jenkins, 68, of Asbury Park, NJ passed away in Good Samaritan Hospital, Long Island, NY on May 23, 2019.  She was born on March 1, 1951 in Fitkin Hospital, Neptune, NJ.

Ursula was the fourth eldest of seven children born to the late William and Alberta Council. As a young child and woman, Ursula attended school in Asbury Park, NJ and graduated from Asbury Park High School. She was employed by EIT as a mechanical assembly worker for over 40 years.

Ursula was a Christian as a child and a loyal and active member of the St. Stephen AME Zion Church for over 35 years. She served on the Usher Board, was a member of the Seacoast Usher Board, and she was also a missionary.

Ursula was a member of Elizabeth Bunn Temple #677 Neptune, NJ of the I.B.P.O.E. of W for over 20 years, serving as gatekeeper, doorkeeper, trustee, Assistant Daughter Ruler, and Vice Daughter Ruler.  She joined Mary Hightower Council in 1995 holding the seat of Escort for many years.  She represented the Council, as the State Queen in 2012, and received the Celestine Jackson Award in 2014.

Ursula received her Past State President honors in June of 1996.  She was security for the NJ State President (Emeritus), and the Directress of the NJ State Does Marshall Department.  She received her P.G.D.R honors in Georgia in 2000 and was also crowned Queen that same year.  As a member of the Past Grand Daughter Ruler’s Circle, she held the seat of Trustee and was the Escort. She received additional awards which included the Louisa C. Hughes Award in 2014, and the Ethel T. Hayes Award in 2015.  She was a member of Maggie G. Hill Marching Unit #2105, where she held the seat of Sergeant-at-Arms, and was a member of the NJ Eastern Division Antler Guard Department holding the Rank of Colonel.  She became the Queen for the Eastern Division Antler Guard Department in 2015 and was also the Chairperson for Special People’s Project.

Ursula was an active a member of the Frederick Dempsey American Legion Post 266 Auxiliary in Neptune NJ, the Red Hat Society Club, and a member of the Motorcycle Club (Cobra One of Asbury Park) and volunteered with the Blue Star Mothers’ #1 of NJ.  She was truly dedicated to every position that she held, was an excellent cook, and could sell raffle tickets, and was affectionately named the “Raffle Queen.” Ursula will surely be missed.

Ursula was a loving and nurturing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who LOVED her children. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and attending their activities. There wasn’t anything that Ursula wouldn’t do for anyone.

She was predeceased by her husband, James “Jimmy” Jenkins; 2 children, Michelle Elliott and Jermaine Elliott; parents, William and Alberta Council; brother, Byron “Barn” Council; and sisters, Cerena Council-Qasim and Sharon Council.

Ursula’s life and cherished memories shall long be remembered by her beloved  children, Theresa Elliott Holman and her husband Derrick Holman, Lakisha Elliott, Jamie Jenkins, Tyshon Jenkins, and Althea Minya; 14 grandchildren, Dyron Elliott, Tykeith Elliott, Saprice Elliott, Saniyah Elliott, Kyree Scott, Shaliyah Jenkins, Derrick Holman, Jamie Jenkins, Jr., Keyon Elliott, Jamie Jenkins, II, Ty’Seir Jenkins, Jahja Minya, Shiasia Dean, and Malcolm Dean; 6 great-grandchildren, Zyon Footman, Ta’Niyla Elliott-Brooks, Shaniya Knight, Mia Dean, LaDarrious Browning, Malachi Dean; 1 aunt, Eula Council, Neptune City, NJ; 2 brothers, William Council and his wife, Della Council, Edgewater, NJ; Stanley Niblack, Freehold, NJ; 1 sister, Debra Washington, La Cruz, NM; 3 sisters-in-law, Beatrice Willis, Dorchester, MA;  Ruth Burnett of Parris, CA; and Brenda J. Terrell, Neptune, NJ; 1 brother-in-law, Jesse Jenkins and his wife, Jeannette Jenkins; a long time friend, Ellis Sinclair; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and a host of cousins, other relatives and loving friends.
