Sidney Hayes Obituary

Sidney McNeice Hayes, Jr., 73, of Long Branch, NJ passed away on October 19, 2020.  He was born on October 12, 1947 at Hazard Hospital in Long Branch, NJ to his loving parents, Sidney McNeice Hayes, Sr. and Maria McCartney Hayes.

He grew up in Asbury Park and graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1966. Sidney also attended Brookdale Community College and LaSalle Extension University. He resided in Newburgh, NY and Long Branch, NJ.

He joined the United States Air Force after high school and spent many years overseas in Spain, South Korea, as well as years as a civilian government employee in many US cities. He was CEO of the commissary at Ft. Monmouth, Deputy CEO at the commissary at Ft, Drum, CEO of the commissary at West Point Military Academy in NY, and Deputy to the Commander of Commissaries in the Far Eastern Region of South Korea.

He’ll always be remembered by his sister, Donna as “The Notorious FIG,” thanks to the nickname Fig or Figgy, for which he was known from childhood until his senior citizen days. He was an extremely generous man who donated to many charities and shared with friends and family alike. Sidney fought a courageous battle against multiple myeloma cancer for many years and most recently kidney disease.

He is survived by wife, Hjordis Hayes; sister, Donna J. Hayes of Neptune, NJ and Richmond, VA; stepchildren, Ruth Calcagni, the late Stephen Mackewitz, the late Theresa Corsa; 7 step grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; special niece and nephew, Theresa and Mike Johnson of Richmond, Virginia; many cousins in the McCartney Clan of Wichita, KS, and The Bahamas, and the Woods Family cousins in Florida; 3 very special cousins, Linda Hayes Beverly of Orange, NJ, Ralph Lewis of Wilmington, DE and the late Eugena Richardson of Washington Heights, NY.

He will be greatly missed and loved forever by his family. We thank God for 73 extraordinary years. A special, grateful thank you with many extra thanks to our extended family and kind neighbors.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to any cancer foundation or charity will be greatly appreciated.
