Robert Carney Obituary

Robert A. Carney, 74, of Asbury Park, NJ passed away on January 8, 2020.  He was born in Rock Mount, NC to the late Bennie Moore and Sadie Carney.

He was raised by foster parents, Mabel and Fred Davis, in Rocky Mount, NC.  Robert moved to New Jersey in 1965 at the age of 20. He was employed at Eddie’s Barbershop in Asbury Park for 10 years. He completed an apprenticeship at Eddie’s Barbershop, and became a master barber. He later worked as a barber in Archie Barbershop in Neptune, NJ.

Robert’s profession as a barber gave him the opportunity to interface and serve many people in the community. He was well known in the community, and friends described him as a generous person whom was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Robert’s first marriage was to Edrine Audrey Carney in 1969. To that union was born one child, Robert A. Carney, Jr., and one granddaughter, Aiesha McEkelle.  Robert married his second wife, Joyce Brown Carney, on December 20, 2018.

His greatest passion was singing. He sang in local night clubs in Asbury Park such as the Orchid Lounge, Big Bills, and The Cuba Club for many years. Robert began singing with the Broadways where he met Bruce Springsteen. He later travelled with Bruce Springsteen as a backup singer, and he also sang with Ray, Goodman & Brown.

Robert confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and joined Foundational Truth Bible Study Ministries in February 2017. He attended bible study diligently and received a certificate of completion for New Members Orientation. Robert was a valued member of the praise team and used his gift of singing to glorify God.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, Bennie Moore (1952) and Sadie Carney (1977); first wife, Edrine Audrey Carney (2012); two sisters, Ruby and Ida Davis; and one brother, Larry Davis.
