Mack Owens, 92, of Neptune, NJ passed away on Friday, June 4, 2021, at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, NJ. He was born in Elizabeth, LA on February 24, 1929 to Wesley and Ethel Pierce.
Mack’s family relocated from Louisiana in the 1940’s to Richmond, CA. He graduated from Edison High School, Fresno, CA. Mack entered the United States Army on July 24, 1947. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Military serving in Korea, Vietnam, and Germany. During the years of 1947-1951, Mack completed his Basic Training, Leadership School, Administration Clerk School, and Tank Command School at Fort Knox, KY. Mack retired after twenty-six and half years of Honorable Service as a Sergeant First Class (SFC) Regular Army on August 31, 1974. After retiring he was employed by the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) and the Neptune Township Board of Education.
He met and married the love of his life, Christine Owens, in Neptune, NJ, 1964. Mack and Christine met while stationed in Fort Knox, KY. Christine, who affectionately called him “Pumpkin,” enjoyed taking vacations to St. Croix, CA, Kentucky, Florida, and Canada. His favorite pastimes were taking trips to Atlantic City, NJ, participating in the Second Baptist Church 3M’s Bowling League for numerous years, listening to jazz, and keeping up with his extensive coin collection. Mack was a longtime member of the ASNEP Social Club.
Mack was a faithful, longtime member of Second Baptist Church, Asbury Park, NJ for over fifty-five years. He was an active member and served on many church ministries. He was part of the Edythe Douglas Food Pantry Ministry, Finance Committee, Senior, Men’s, and Combined Choirs, and Second Baptist Church Men’s Ministry. He received the Men’s Ministry Special Recognition Guidance Support Leader “Cultivating the Crop for Harvest”, and received the “Rev. Dr. Brian T. Wells Man of the Year Award” in 2015.
Mack was predeceased by his parents, Wesley and Ethel Pierce; son, Mark Owens, Jr.; and daughter Regina Owens.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-six years, Christine Owens of Neptune, NJ; daughters, Valerie and Lori Owens, Louisville, KY; their mother, Delores Owens of Louisville, KY; grandsons, Major Mack Owens, III (Maria) and Christopher Owens of Louisville, KY; granddaughter, Adrienne Tennyson of Louisville, KY; twelve great-grandchildren, thirteen great-great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
