John Dillon Obituary

John Henry Dillon, a faithful servant of God, a loving husband, a devoted father, and a cherished friend, peacefully departed this life on March 11, 2026, at the blessed age of 93. His life was a living testimony of God’s grace, love, and unwavering faithfulness.

John was born on March 23, 1932, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Bessie Norman Dillon and Clarence Dillon. His mother lovingly called him her “bundle of joy for Easter,” as his birth came near that sacred season, a fitting beginning for a life that would shine with the light of Christ. As it is written in Psalm 127:3, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him,” and John truly was a gift to all who knew him.

He was educated in the Savannah public school system and, while attending high school, John worked diligently at Mr. Cramer’s pawn shop, where his warm spirit and strong work ethic were evident in every task, from dressing windows to assisting customers.

Upon completion of high school, John answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army, where he served honorably for two years.

John later found his calling on the open road as a truck driver. He not only drove trucks but also took pride in owning his own, embodying independence, responsibility, and perseverance. He continued his career with Stavola in Red Bank, New Jersey, where he worked faithfully for over 15 years. He was also a proud member of Local Union 469 and a devoted Mason.

Above all, John was a man after God’s own heart. He was a long-standing and dedicated member of The Mt. Pisgah Baptist Temple in Asbury Park, New Jersey. There, he served faithfully in the Usher’s Ministry, the Men’s Ministry, the Laymen’s Movement, and the Seacoast Missionary Baptist Association’s Usher’s Ministry. He understood that service to God meant service to others, living out Galatians 5:13: “Serve one another humbly in love.”

John’s love for the Lord was perhaps most powerfully expressed through song. As a member of the Male Chorus and the Angelic Messengers, he lifted his voice in praise, often leading beloved hymns such as “This Morning When I Rose” and “Because He Lives.” When John sang, hearts were stirred, spirits were lifted, and the presence of the Lord filled the room. As Psalm 100:2 reminds us, “Serve the Lord with gladness: come before His presence with singing.”

Outside of church, John enjoyed fellowship and friendship. He was a proud member of the Free Wheelers Motorcycle Club and the Dunkin’ Donuts Club, where laughter and camaraderie were always present. He found joy in simple moments spent with those he loved.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Bessie Dillon; his brothers, Clarence Jr., James, and Peter Dillon; his sisters, Millie Stone, Dorothy Millerton, and Bessie Burrough; his brothers-in-law, George Washington, Bishop Bernard Washington, and Charles Washington; and his sisters-in-law, Ruth Williams, Delia Washington, Betty Washington, Julia Mae Washington, and Edna Washington.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his beloved wife, the apple of his eye, Essie Washington Dillon, whose love and devotion stood as a testament to God’s design for marriage. Together, they embodied Ecclesiastes 4:12: “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

He is also survived by his four sons: John Day, Jr. (Patricia) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Kurt Day (Jill) of Jacksonville, Florida; Drake Day (Nicole) of Atlanta, Georgia; and Tyrone Day of Hawaii. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, along with his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

John loved God, his family, his church family, his pastor, Rev. Brandon, and all those whose lives he touched. He was a man who showed up for his family, for his church, and for anyone in need. His kindness was quiet yet powerful, and his faith was steady and unshakable. He lived by the words of Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit lives on in every life he touched. We take comfort in knowing that he has heard the words of our Lord: “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:23).

John Henry Dillon’s life was not just lived; it was poured out in love, faith, and service. And because he lived, we are all better for it.
