James Roberts Obituary

Effective 9 pm Saturday, March 21, 2020, New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy, had mandated by executive order #107 that all New Jersey residents shall remain home or in their place of residence unless they are obtaining essential goods or services from businesses or government agencies.  All gatherings of individuals, such as funeral services, parties, celebrations, or other social events, are cancelled.

These restrictions will remain in effect until further notice from the state governor.  Due to the current restrictions, there will not be a funeral service for James A. Roberts.

The family is grateful, and would like to extend their sincere thanks, for all the support and condolences from friends and the community in their time of mourning. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

 

Obituary

James Albert "Jimmy” Roberts, 89, of Neptune, NJ made his transition on Monday, April 13, 2020. He was born on May 25, 1930 in Neptune, NJ and was a lifelong resident of the New Jersey shore. He was the fifth of seven children born to Wilbur "Bill" Roberts and Minnie Biggers Roberts of Asbury Park, NJ.

James attended Asbury Park, NJ public schools and graduated in 1948. He enlisted and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. After James was honorably discharged from the Army, he became a truck driver for Farber Brothers Trucking Company in Linden, NJ. He was employed with the company for many years and was active in their union. Later in life, he was a favorite bus driver for the Tinton Falls School District until his retirement.

He was a lifelong member of St. Stephen AME Zion Church in Asbury Park and was active on several committees and activities. Jimmy always had a smile and a kind word for anyone he met. He enjoyed traveling extensively to Jamaica, Aruba and the Bahamas, spending time at the race track and afternoons at the casinos in Atlantic City, relaxing on the boardwalk, and spending time with his family. Jimmy had a sweet tooth. Whenever he would visit someone he would say "Hi baby-cakes, do you have some coconut cake or apple pie with you?".

He is predeceased by his parents, Wilbur "Bill" Roberts and Minnie Biggers Roberts; brothers, Ulysses "UL" Roberts and Walter "Bucky" Roberts;  and sisters, Elsie Roberts, Evelyn Perry, and Shirley Roberts.

James is survived by his wife, Valerie Roberts of Neptune, NJ; daughters, Jacquetta Winters of Montclair, NJ,  Romaine Roberts of Long Branch), Tiara Phillips (Neptune), a son James Roberts (Lawrenceville, GA), step son Jadus McIntyre (Neptune, NJ) and his sister Juanita Jones (Buffalo, NY). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Ian, Leah,, Jada, Jalen, Justin, Jah’siim, Na’ Zyiah, Arionna, My’Shaun, Mo’riah, Jadius, Jayahanna, Javon, and Jada; nieces Celeste Sang, Daphne Roberts, Kim Roberts and Wanda Roberts; nephews Richard Jones, Greg Perry, James Q. Roberts, Walter Roberts and Dale Roberts along with a host of great nieces and nephews.
