Gladys Oliver, 87 was born on June 6, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York to the late John Abern Hubbard and Lottie Pearl Hill. She was the third child of 5 children. Gladys transitioned from earth to Glory on Thursday evening December 16, 2021, at her home in Manchester, New Jersey.
Gladys was born, raised, and educated in the N.Y.C. Public Education system. She later met and married the love of her life Wilton Ollie Oliver Sr. of Stamford, Connecticut. They were married for 32 years until his death in 1986. Their union was blessed with four children, Darrell (Robb), Marlene, Michele, and Sheila. Wilton had a son, Wilton Ollie Jr., prior to this union, and they became a blended family of 5 children.
Gladys was employed by the N.Y.C. Board of Education as a School Lunch Aide for many years. After her husband became ill, she returned to school attending LaGuardia Community College. She completed her degree program earning an Associate Degree in Food Service Management/ Nutrition and Dietary Service. She was later promoted to become a Food Service Manager for the Board of Education Local 32 where she circulated throughout various school lunch programs. She became very well known as a school lunch manager who’d give respect toward her colleagues as she delegated assignments, and for those whom she served.
Gladys and her family attended church regularly at Wayside Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York well over 20 years under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Joe L. Parker where she also had many friends, and family members that attended. She was well admired, respected, and loved by so many.
Gladys was more on the quiet and shy side, but her hobby and joy was playing “Bid Whist” and she could sure talk a good game! She loved being a mother, and she loved her family. She was dedicated to raising her children on good soil. Those were the good old days, of eating dinner together, especially those big meals she prepared on Sundays.
In later years Gladys reconnected with a friend from her childhood named Frank (deceased). The two of them rekindled a strong bond and a relationship which made them inseparable for many years.
As Gladys grew older, she later relocated to Manchester, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilton, beloved partner, Frank, mother, Lottie Smith, sisters, Dorothy Johnson (David), and Emma Ballard (Walter), and brother, Leonard Hubbard (Ida).
She is survived by her four children, Darrell (Nadine) of Staten Island, NY, Marlene (Joseph) of Morganville NJ, Michele of Manchester, NJ, and Sheila (Gerald) of Sarasota, FL, brother, John “Sonny” Herbert of Indian Trail, NC, 15 grandchildren, Nitra Oliver-White (John), Shakera Greene, Dorian Crawford (Alicia), Carles Spruill Sr., Isaiah Oliver (Sharon), Erin Morris (Darian), Wilton Oliver III, Rainel Oliver, Mercedes Asare (Yaw), Kimberly Davis (Peter), Jelisha Oliver, Chandler Lane, William Bruce, Kendall Oliver, and Dana Oliver-Ransom, she was also blessed with 25 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
