Dorothy Mae Goff Greene, 74 of Jackson, NJ passed away on September 26, 2022. She was born on January 14, 1948, to the late Oliver and Maria Rhodes Goff in Georgetown, SC.
Dorothy's faith and foundation in the Lord was established very early in her childhood. Dorothy grew up in a Christian home with her parents and eight siblings. She attended Greater St. Stephen African Methodist Episcopal Church with her mother in the Port City of Georgetown, SC. As a youth, she participated in various capacities within the church. A quiet, shy person; her persona reflected that of a young lady with exquisitely defined characteristics. Over the years she developed a close friendship with many school friends including Rosalind Maybank Anderson Sarah Pearl, late Albertha White, late Kelly Jones, and late Lorenzo Mickel. They would always be seen together on the campus, joking, laughing, and enjoying each other during recess.
As an active member of Howard High School’s class of 1966, she diligently participated in every aspect of activities. Creativity and versatility were a part of Dorothy's God given talent and often demonstrated during Homecoming when she utilized her expertise by decorating floats for the annual parades. She was also a member of the Homemakers Club and relished cooking and trying out new recipes. Dorothy enjoyed being around her classmates and they mutually enjoyed being around her.
Dorothy graduated from Howard High School in 1966. She married her high school sweetheart and best friend, Andrew Greene in 1969 and they enjoyed almost 50 years of marital bliss together. To their beautiful marital union, two daughters were born: Monifa Greene and Niyonu Keya Greene. The Greene Family lived in Bronx, NY for six years and Monroe, NY for three years. They later resided in Jackson, NJ for over 39 years, where they continued to raise their family.
Dorothy was a mighty prayer warrior and had a servant’s heart – her daily lifestyle was one of giving her time, talents, and resources to meet the needs of others. On any given day, she could be found sharing scriptures, praying for, and encouraging others, visiting the sick, cooking a meal, donating goods including clothing to shelters, and back to school supplies. She took pleasure in surprising others with gifts simply because she was thinking of you and wanted to bring a smile to your face. It was important to her to know that you were special and loved.
Dorothy lived her life unselfishly with great purpose and intent – always depositing into others. Whether family, friends, or a stranger – anyone in her presence, always left “full” because of encountering her. Her life illustrated that small acts of love can have huge impacts.
Dorothy never failed to be anything less than excellent as a wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was adored and cherished by all who knew and loved her. She was a beautiful woman of faith, wisdom and grace and is best described as being loving, kind, classy, fun, and stylish. She enjoyed spending time with her daughters and granddaughters - often shopping, conversing, and watching movies together. It brought Dorothy great joy sharing new memories and experiences with her daughters and growing granddaughters as they blossomed into lovely young ladies.
Dorothy’s life embodied her love of God’s word, her culture, listening to gospel music, going for walks, shopping, baking apple pie, cooking her granddaughter’s favorite dishes, sending cards, and flowers – whether planting them in her garden or receiving them as gifts.
For over a decade, Dorothy was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church in Lindenwold, NJ. She served in the “Rescued - Timothy Evangelism & Prison Outreach Ministry”; there she participated as a church volunteer providing Bible Study and Church Service at Jamesburg Youth Correctional Facility.
Dorothy M. Goff Greene will be forever remembered and loved by her late husband, Andrew Greene; their loving children, Monifa and Niyonu Keya Greene, her precious granddaughters Kemi and Seyi Ajibawo, and by her siblings and their spouses who are dear to her heart: the late James Goff of MA, Benjamin and Josephia Goff of MA, Herbert and Marguerite Goff of VA, Thomas and Sherrel Goff of VA, Robert and Hershula Goff of VA, and sisters Margaret Clayton of NY, and Mary and Johnnie Goff of NY.
