Dorothy Crippen Obituary

Dorothy Mae Crippen,87, of Toms River, NJ was born to Julius and Pearl Walker in Hastings, FL on November 29, 1931. She was one of 6 children, three of which preceded her in death.

Dorothy attended Brooklyn Public Schools and eventually graduated from Brooklyn High School. After high school she attended Glassboro State College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching.

Dorothy had a wonderful and very productive career; even while she raised her children and saw to it that they had everything they needed. She began her teaching career in the Lakewood, NJ, Public School system.

She was a founding member of the Lakewood Head Start program, community worker (Den Mother for the Cub Scouts), served as a notary public, member of the NAACP, member of the Eastern Star, and she was active in helping people become registered voters. Additionally, she was active politically in the community, and to top it off, Dorothy served in Lakewood as a Librarian for 28 years, from which she would eventually retire. She was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades from her peers, city officials, and those who held her in high regard.

Dorothy served in many capacities in her secular life, but was also a believer in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  She was a longtime member of New Life Christian Center, where she served as church mother under Pastor Marcia Griffin.

In her later years Dorothy served as the matriarch of her family, nurturing and mentoring the oldest to the youngest. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Crippen Sr.; daughter, Barbara West; son, Myron Crippen; 2 sisters, Willamena and Sarah; 6 children, Michael, Ruth, Robert Jr., George, Larry, and Sharon; 17 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 2 special people, Wilma and Miss Myrtle Hargrove; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
