Benjamin Berry Obituary

Benjamin David Berry, 78, of Neptune, NJ went Home to the Lord, whom he served so well, on Monday, August 10, 2020. Ben, a native of New Jersey, grew up in Pine Brook, NJ where his mother established the A.M.E. Mt. Zion Church of Pine Brook.  In his later years, he became one of the reverends there.

Before returning to his roots, Ben took to the open road, procuring employment as a driver for Ideal Way Movers.  After many years there, he changed to driving a van for a paratransit company.  That’s when he really started ministering to the patients whom he drove to and from their appointments.  A desire stirred within him to continue counseling and sharing the Word of God.  Consequently, it was a degree in counseling that would turn his heart’s desire into reality.

In 2005, Ben received his traveling minister certification from Liberty University, an online school, but was not allowed to counsel until he received his General Equivalency Diploma.  Ben went back to school and, in 2008, at the age of 67, he graduated from MAECOM (Monmouth Adult Education Commission of Monmouth County) with his G.E.D. and was asked to be valedictorian of his class.

After a time, Ben felt the Lord calling him to return to his mother’s church.  There he served with joy delivering messages and teaching children about God.  He also went to various nursing homes once a month to do worship with the residents, singing wholeheartedly to the Lord.

Benjamin David Berry, unfailingly, served his family and his church family with a selfless servant’s heart, touching so many lives during his time here with us.

Being the youngest of eight children, Ben is survived by his only living sister, Ruth Hollaway; eight children, Benjamin David Berry, Jr., Sherry Thompson, Kevin Berry and his wife, Donna, Yvette Berry, Rodney Berry, Jeffrey Berry, Michele Berry, and La Wanda Dingle Lucas and her husband, Sheldon; as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
