Vernell Chatman, 79, wife of the late Sam Chatman, departed this earthly life on Thursday, March 30, 2017. She was born in Rembert, South Carolina to the late Rembert Sanders, Sr. and Rosa Dennis Sanders.
Vernell was educated in the Rafting Creek school system. She moved to Asbury Park, New Jersey at an early age, was employed as a domestic engineer for more than 30 years.
She loved attending church and singing for her Lord. She dedicated her life to raising her children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. In her retirement, she loved to cook, dance, travel, and listen to music.
Vernell had a strong and sincere love for her family, both the immediate and the extended family members. It was a pleasure for Vernell to serve her Lord as she was a longtime member of Deliverance Temple in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her longtime companion, L.C. Pelzer; son, Larry Pelzer; six brothers, David, Owens, Willie, Harvin, John and Rembert, Jr.; and five sisters, Janie, Hattie, Bernice, Mammie and Alberta.
Those left to treasure her legacy are her children, Wayne Drinks of Asbury Park, New Jersey, Kim Chatman (Joanna) of Jackson, New Jersey, Renda Chatman and Mattie Harrel, both of South Carolina; five grandchildren, Keasha Morris, Kimberly Pelzer, Seidana Chatman, Shakena Brown, and Dominque Jackson; nine great grandchildren, Essence Scott, Everonna Scott, A.J. Scott, Jakeim Moss, D'ovion Fortune, Nicholas Fortune, Kailyn Fullard, ZiAsia Wright, and Zion Wright; siblings, Pauline Loney, Hazel Nelson, and Frank Sanders (Mary); sister-in-law, Johnnie Mae Sanders; brother-in-law, Edward Alson; nieces,nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
