Toni O.S. Veasy, 81, of Neptune, NJ, passed away on July 1, 2022, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, NJ.
She attended Rust College in Holly Springs, MS where she received a BS degree in Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry and obtained a MS degree in Student Personal Services from Kean College in NJ. She also attained a Special Education Certification from Jersey City State College and a Supervisor's Certificate from Georgian Court College in Lakewood, NJ.
She began her professional career in 1961 at Walls High School in Walls, MS as a mathematics and chemistry teacher. Toni then worked at Lincoln Junior High School in Memphis, TN from 1963-1967 as a math teacher. In 1967 Toni moved to New Jersey with her former husband, Louis, who was stationed at Fort Monmouth military base in Eatontown, NJ. It was where Toni began her tenure at Asbury Park High School (APHS).
From 1967-1980, Toni taught at Asbury Park High School (APHS) as a mathematics teacher. In 1980, she became a guidance counselor and served as a supervisor of the Guidance Department her last five years, retiring in 2002. She also served as the evening adult education counselor from 1998-2001.
During Toni's time at APHS, she enjoyed collaborative community partnerships. She was a cheerleader advisor and a liaison between APHS athletes and college coaches which helped students secure academic and athletic scholarships. In 1998, Toni was elected to Who's Who Among America's Teachers. In 1997, she was listed as one of City News' 100 Most Influential Persons.
Toni was predeceased by her parents, Arbella Truss Scott and Sam Scott, and brother, Johnale Scott. She is survived by her loving daughter, Margaret Veasy-Mendoza, son-in-law, Sylvester Mendoza, grandchildren, Alexis, Gabe, and Colin of Upper Saddle River, NJ, sister, Othea Scott, goddaughters, Vernell Lewis, and Valerie Weatherspoon.
