Mayo Legette,
Jr.
Jul 12, 1946 — May 1, 2016
Mayo Legette, Jr. was born on July 12, 1946 in Gresham, SC to the late Mayo Legette, Sr. and Evelyn Legette. He was the second child born to this union. Upon the death of his mother during his early childhood years, he and his siblings were raised by his paternal grandmother, Almena (cousin Miz).
Mayo, Jr. was an energetic, happy, playful child with an active, but very creative mind. His unique personality and prankish ways earned him a most unusual nickname, "Pistol".
As a young child he attended Friendship AME Church. He participated in Sunday school, church services, and other children's day programs.
Mayo, Jr. was educated in the South Carolina and New Jersey school systems. Upon graduating from Neptune High School, he attended Bluefield State College in West Virginia. From Bluefield State College, Mayo, Jr. went to Los Angeles, CA where he continued his college education. He later returned to the east coast to live.
Mayo, Jr. had a warm personality. He was an avid sports fan, connoisseur of current events and historical facts. Mayo, Jr. was a creative cook and a wonderful fisherman!
Mayo, Jr. worked as a laborer in the building trade industry for more than twenty-five years under International Locals 343 and 595. He served as a recording secretary for Local 343 for many years. He also served as Local 343/595 Retiree Council Secretary. He retired in 2008 from Local 595.
After retirement, Mayo, Jr. reunited with St. Stephen's AME Zion Church where he had been a member as a child with his family in earlier years. He served faithfully on the Men's Usher Board, F.M.D. Men's Ministry, Boyz to Men Choir, and the Seacoast Ushers Union.
Mayo, Jr. leaves to mourn his passing a devoted sister, Iola Legette of Southfield, MI; a loving brother, Herman Legette of Gresham, SC; two adopted brothers, Richard Fortune (Stephanie) of Rayford, NC, Mark Fortune (Jacqueline) of New Bern, NC; two devoted cousins, Theresa V. Morris of Brooklyn, NY, Mattie Purvis of Asbury Park, NJ; a host of other cousins, relatives, friends, church family members, and the most exemplary friends any human being could ever have. Their relentless acts of love, time, concern, and commitment were simply awesome. Their names are as follows; Marshall Alston of Neptune, NJ, Ronald Clark of Neptune, NJ, Norman Lattimore of Columbia, SC, Floyd Craig of Phoenix, AZ, little Mister Prince of Asbury Park, NJ. Two dear friends preceded him in death, Ralph Wilson, and Gary Allen.
Mayo, Jr. will be missed more than words can ever be said by family, friends and community. His humanity, gentle spirit and generosity touched the lives of so many near and far.
