Kenneth Haynes was born on August 13, 1936 and attended Neptune Township, NJ schools. He was a proud descendant of the Sand Hill Band (Monmouth County, NJ) of Cherokee-Delaware Indians, and he was the first Black barber at Fort Monmouth, NJ.

He spent many years working and living in New York.  Born in Neptune, Kenneth returned to the area upon his retirement, after the loss of his beloved mother, Margaret Carter. He was a communicant of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, Asbury Park, NJ.

Mr. Haynes served on the Executive Board of Trustees of the Visiting Nurse Association, and was past President, retiring due to illness.   During his time on the board, Kenneth saw the initiation of the VNA Community Health Center in Asbury Park, and was recognized for his service. Kenneth also served the Monmouth County Board of Elections as a poll worker in Neptune and Asbury Park from June, 2004 through the present.

Kenneth always had some project in progress, whether it was repairing cars, building model ships, collecting art pieces for refurbishing his home, or redecorating. He enjoyed photography, fishing, and bargain hunting at places such as the Ballard United Methodist Church Thrift Shop, Asbury Park.

He had a great love of music, especially jazz and blues, and enjoyed playing the saxophone for many years. Kenneth loved to read and had wide ranging interests in non-fiction and "serious" works of fiction.

He enjoyed his relationships with family members, life-long and new friends, and fellow residents at Asbury Tower. He loved to discuss current events and politics, and could always be depended upon to give sound advice.

He was predeceased by his sister, Joan Thomas.  He is survived by his daughter, Cheryle Haynes of Neptune, NJ; son, Kenneth E. Haynes, Jr. of Neptune, NJ; mother, NiQui Donato of Neptune, NJ; daughter, Deidre Matthew (Matt) and her mother Sandra Miller of Baltimore, MD; brothers, William Carter Jr. of Tinton Falls, NJ, and Michael Carter of Columbus, OH; sister, Valerie  Carter of Tinton Falls, NJ; five grandchildren, NiQuiera Washington (Gregory) of Neptune, NJ, Michael Shirley (Aleisha) of  Chesapeake, VA, Amber, Alyshea and Jaden Matthew of Baltimore, MD; five great grandchildren; as well as a host of loving extended family and friends.
