Obituary

Joseph Weatherspoon, Jr., 64, of Neptune, NJ passed away peacefully on Wednesday January 20, 2021, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune NJ. Joseph was born on November 15, 1956 to Joseph Weatherspoon Sr. and Vivien Weatherspoon (Hawkins), in Port Chester, New York.

Joseph was an Alter Boy and received his Holy Communion at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, Asbury Park, NJ. He graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1975 and in September of that year, he attended Brookdale Community College to pursue a career in Marine Biology.

Fate had other plans for Joseph, and he embarked on a career at Norword Distributors where he worked for 20 years at both locations in Asbury Park and Lakewood, NJ. After leaving Norword Distributors, Joseph took a position with TFH Nylabone.

Joseph had many interests, such as archery, bowling, and billiards, but his first love was swimming. Many people knew Joseph was like a fish to water when it came to swimming. There wasn't a swimming pool to deep or ocean to big Joseph would not dive into. Joe's secondary love was cooking outdoors on the grill, regardless of the weather conditions. Joe was also known for his infamous ribs, cheeseburgers, and banana pancakes. At social gatherings he didn't mind hitting the dance floor. Joseph was also highly organized and meticulous on home projects, painting being his specialty.

Joseph married Valerie Henderson in Montego Bay, Jamaica on July 22, 1987. They remained married for 33 years. Their relationship started with friendship and mutual understanding and grew into Love. During their union they purchased a home, enjoyed travelling, music and the movies.

Joseph was a kind, fun loving man, with a big smile and lots of laughter. He had compassion and love in his heart for humanity. He was always comfortable in any given situation and able to blend in with people from different backgrounds. Anyone who ever met him always left his presence feeling they had made a friend.

He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph Weatherspoon, Sr. and Vivien Weatherspoon, and grandparents, Sidney, and Mary Hawkins (Sidney was the first Afro-American Patrolman for the City of Asbury Park), and Archie and Grace Weatherspoon.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie, sister, Mary Grace Wade (Kenneth), nephews, Mark and Tye Wade, niece, Cheryl Wade, brother in laws, James Henderson Jr. (Karen), David Henderson, sister in laws, Patrina Proctor (Samuel), and Iris Walter (Derrick), childhood friend, Raymond Bennett, and host of friends and family.
