James Sims Obituary

James W. Sims, 78, of Ocean Township, NJ passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, NJ. He was born on April 20, 1941 in Cumberland County, VA to William Phillip Sims and Cornelia Foster Sims.

At an early age, he joined the Midway Baptist Church in Cumberland County, VA.  James was a member of the church until he moved to Asbury Park, NJ in 1966. He then became a longtime member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Temple, Asbury Park, NJ. He served as an Usher, President of Angelic Messenger, member of the Men’s Choir, Chairman of Deacon Ministry, and member of Laymen’s of Seacoast Missionary Association. He graduated from Monmouth Bible Institute in 1997.

He was employed by Sears as a service man, and Delisa Waste Service as a mechanic. James also was the owner of Jimmy Truck Tires for 10 years.  In 2007, he retired from Marpal Disposal in Tinton Falls, NJ. He was a lifetime resident of Asbury Park, NJ before moving to Ocean Township, NJ in 2017. James was married to Lesly L. Booker-Sims, of Ocean Township, NJ on February 3, 1962. They were married for 57 years.

James loved the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family. James would brag about his children and grandchildren to anyone who would listen to him. He also loved to sing. His favorite songs were, “Let Jesus Lead Me” and “Down through the Years”. He had a passion for driving racing cars, and won several trophies. He loved crossword puzzles. He was not afraid to tell you how he felt and what he thought.

He was predeceased by his parents, William Phillip Sims and Cornelia Foster Sims; siblings, Dorothy Rogers of Deltona, FL, Martha Foster of Belmar, NJ, Judy Theresa Tucker of Cumberland County, VA, and Yvonne Farley of Neptune, NJ.

He is survived by his wife, Lesly L. Booker-Sims of Ocean Township, NJ; son, James “Jimmy” Sims and wife, Sally Sims of Orlando, FL; two daughters, Lora Moore and her husband Rev. Louis Moore of Neptune, NJ, Debora West and her husband, Howard West II of Howell, NJ; special nephew, Robert “Tony” Farley of Neptune, NJ; brother, Leon Sims of Asbury Park, NJ; sister, Shirley Sims of Asbury Park, NJ; brother-in-law, George Rogers of Deltona, FL; uncle, John Lee Foster of Asbury Park, NJ; four granddaughters, Ashley, Brittany, Lauren and Taylor; two grandsons, Raje and Halston; three great-grandsons, Jahzir,  Jaylen, and Raje, Jr; one great-granddaughter, Reign; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
