Cassandra Johns Obituary

Cassandra Martha Johns, 70, of Toms River, NJ made her transition to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at Ocean County Medical Center, Brick, NJ.  She was born in Mount Vernon, NY on September 24, 1947 to Enoch and Alberta Johns.

Cassandra Martha Johns was joyfully welcomed as the 3rd of 4 children, and was full of quiet strength and a deep and abiding love for her siblings. After graduating from Mount Vernon High School, Cassandra continued her education by pursuing an advanced degree in Business Administration at Tennessee State University in 1965.

She was a Bookkeeping professional for numerous companies in the NYC and NJ area for over the past 30 years. Cassandra excelled at identifying the details and balancing the ledgers.

She was a member of both the Urban League and the Ocean County NAACP, and was a steadfast member who was as reliable as she was loyal to their mission and goals. Cassandra was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, NY, and was a devoted member of the Second Baptist Church of Toms River, NJ.  She enjoyed Sunday school, fellowship, and volunteering with the meal services program for the past 10 years.

Cassandra was a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother, and truly loved spending time with her family.  She especially enjoyed Thanksgiving and Christmas when everyone joined together breaking bread, exchanging good times, and watching the children open presents with love and laughter!

She was a resident of Lakewood, NJ for over 40 years,  and spent her last few years as a member of the Toms River community where she enjoyed both the lake and her church. Cassandra also had a voracious appetite for reading and was a force to be reckoned with as a solitaire player!

While Cassandra was too often afflicted by a host of ailments, she spent no time lamenting over her circumstances.  Strong-willed and determined as she was smart, funny and opinionated, Cassandra’s strength lied in her ability to keep pushing forward as life’s changes came her way.

And while never asking for much, one of her fervent prayers revolved around her desire to not be a burden to anyone and that her children maintain a close, strong bond as a family.

Cassandra was predeceased by her parents, Enoch and Alberta Johns; siblings, Carol Johns, Brenda Jones, and Richard Johns; aunts, Gertrude Sears, Carrie Hilton ,and Alliey Redhead; and first cousin, Larry Hilton.

She is survived by her children, Desiree Patrice Johns, James M. Waters, and Nyree Michelle Waters; grandchildren, Keenan Ore, Yahnah Johns-Woodby, and Ariyah Watts-Waters; nieces and nephews, Dawn Hilton-Williams, Leah Owens, Timisha Jones, Shaan Hilton, Larra Hilton, Larry Hilton, and Mark Hilton; first cousin, Della Lytle; and a great multitude of loving cousins and friends.
